Second annual “Crossroads of Europe” symposium: Toulouse, 15 – 17 May 2013

The “Crossroads of Europe” symposium is an annual event dedicated to European cultural routes and places of a rich heritage associated with cultural unification. Its principle aim is to promote cooperation and exchange, to raise awareness of the potential held by these cultural routes in tourism, and to provide opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses to integrate with tour operators.

European cultural routes highlight the common history and culture of European territories and invite tourists to cross borders. They are also regarded as being a sustainable, ethical and social model, because they build on local knowledge, skills and heritage assets, often promote lesser known European destinations as new tourism “product”, contributing to diversify the tourism offer. Moreover, 90% of their trails are in rural areas.

This event gives an opportunity for the tourism sector to reflect on how cultural routes will play a role in this important industry, which generates over 10% of the continent’s GDP and employs 9.7 million citizens. Crossroads of Europe will bring together a range of tourism industry professionals, public authorities, cultural and tourism organisations and cultural routes’ managers. There will be opportunities also to know initiatives to improve the sustainable tourism in Europe, such as PM4ESDTM project management methodology, which will be presented by the network NECSTour. Registration is required for attendance. The European Commission is inviting a limited number of journalists in this event. It will cover travel and accommodation costs.

The symposium is organised by the European Commission in partnership with the French Ministry of Tourism, the Region Midi-Pyrénées, the Euroregion “Pyrénées-Méditerranée”, the Municipality of Toulouse and the Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
