EU Sustainable Energy Week 2012

The EU Sustainable Energy Week, organised by the Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation (EACI) on behalf of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy, took place in Brussels between 18 and 22 June 2012. An estimated 150.000 people across Europe discussed energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions, under the slogan “Take our future into your hands”.

This year’s main theme has been the recently adopted Communication on the Renewable Energy Strategy which explores the policy options for the integration of renewables into the European system post 2020. EU Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger, opening the EU Conference on Sustainable Energy Policy, said: “Sustainable energy is at the heart of the Europe 2020 Strategy for sustainable growth and employment (…). It is time for Europe to step up efforts in informing its citizens about the benefits of it, and ensure that renewable energy can become a competitive player in the European energy market.”

Among the most meaningful events, the announcement of the winners of the five Sustainable Energy Europe Awards (categories: Communicating, Consuming, Learning, Living and Travelling) and the winner of the ManagEnergy Award, recognising the best practice in local and regional energy action; the audiovisual media event “European Renewable Energy Weather Forecast”; the Plenary session “Renewable Energy: a Major Player in the European Energy Market”, and the presentation “Building a 2020 Vision for Europe’s energy customers”.

Alongside the conference, the EU Sustainable Energy Week featured this year about 150 events in Brussels, and over 950 events taking place in over 40 countries in Europe and beyond in the context of “Energy Days”. These events have been complemented with exhibitions and workshops advising on how small businesses and households can contribute to the collective energy efficiency effort, having the potential to generate financial savings of up to €1000 per household each year, improve Europe’s industrial competitiveness and create up to 2 million jobs.
