Going ahead with the implementation of the European Tourism Indicators System (ETIS)

European Tourism Indicators System (ETIS) was launched in Brussels on 22nd February 2013. It aims at facilitating the efforts of those tourism stakeholders who are committed to ensure a sustainable management of their destination, by providing them with an easy to use toolkit.

After launching the ETIS, DG Enterprise Tourism Unit is implementing a participatory process in order to assess its effectiveness and deciding about possible improvements. The first step was the organisation of a technical workshop on 19th April of this year. 45 participants, representing a wide variety of stakeholders, discussed about the next stages to implement and test the system.

After the workshop, and based on the inputs provided, DG Enterprise Tourism Unit has decided:

1.   The test implementation phase will be organized in three different rounds of 9 months each, slightly overlapping (A tentative calendar, which can be revised according to the assessment of the implementation):

Ø  July 2013 – April 2014

Ø  December 2013 – September 2014

Ø  April 2014 – January 2015

2.   The Unit will launch calls for expression of interest addressed to destinations which are potentially interested in participating in the test implementation phase. Throughout the whole duration of each round, the Unit will continue its awareness raising activities to increase interest in ETIS.

3.   All participant destinations will provide the Unit with a feedback at the end of each round. They all will be part of a ETIS platform thus enabling other interested destinations to benefit from their expertise when deciding whether to participate in the next pilot round.

  1. Am I the only one to find this posting less than informative?

It holds promise but little substance with http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/sectors/tourism/index_en.htm linking to a general site with no specific information on the European Tourism Indicators System (ETIS).

Better to have provided the link http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/sectors/tourism/sustainable-tourism/indicators/index_en.htm

Better still to have sent people to the document at http://goo.gl/tcV1K
